Microsoft Xbox 360 Live Vision Camera Driver For Mac: Benefits and Advantages

I have an xbox live vision camera that worked well with older os's, but doesn't seem to work with el capitain. Any way to get it to work? I'm using a Mac Mini with a monitor, and it would be nice to have a camera as well (without having to buy a new one). Thanks!

I would think it should work as is. However, as discussed in this reddit discussion page, it seems that a workaround can be found for some, but not all, users who share your problem. I don't use xbox live vision camera so I have not tested any of the possible suggestions in the redditi page.

If none of the four suggestions above gets your xbox live vision camera working with El Cap, given the low cost of some Mac compatible UVC webcams, it may be wiser to opt for the new camera that is known to work with your system. A reliable retailer will be able to warrant that the new cam he sells is compatible with your Mac.

Thanks for the response. The camera indeed does not work with El Capitan, and none of the suggestions by Apple helped. (Incidentally, they assume that it's a firewire connection, but the xbox live vision camera is usb.) The reddit discussion seems to be more about enabling a controller for games than a camera. (I browsed through the discussion, and a search for "cam" yielded no results.)

All xbox live vision cameras are all USB devices. They are listed as UVC devices. As such, they should work without additional software on any Mac using OS X version 10.4.9 and later. For these OS X versions, all software necessary for UVC device use is automatically included by the OS X installer.

I have also successfully tested external iSight with my 15 inch Early 2011 Macbook Pro. It seems older cameras like xbox live vision and external (Firewire) iSight might best be used with Macs of a similar age.

An encoder takes audio and video content from various sources you use during a live event such as, camera, microphone, desktop screen capture, etc., compresses and converts that media into a suitable digital format, then sends it to Microsoft Stream (Classic) for live streaming to your audience.

The driver will be installed from the zip file, the device managerwill notify you of the new device, then prompt you for installationof another device. Repeat the same procedure from step 3 until no moredevices need to be installed. This procedure will repeat three to fourtimes until all drivers are installed, as the Kinect shows up asmultiple separate devices (Video camera, Audio soundcard andKinect motor).

The bounty, called the X prize, was to be awarded to the first person able to produce open source drivers for the Kinect. The drivers could be functional on any operating system and had to be accompanied by an application that demonstrated their functionality by displaying a split window of the depth data and the RGB camera. Microsoft caught wind of this little competition, and its initial response was that of any company undergoing a major hardware launch. Since the Xbox 360 was hacked quite some time ago, this knee-jerk response was issued from a Microsoft PR rep:

Your first step into the world of videoconferencing--if your computer didn't come with a built-in camera--is to set up your Webcam. Nearly all Webcams are USB devices, so setup is generally very easy. In most cases, however, you should install the driver software before plugging in the camera, to ensure that your drivers function properly. In the case of most Logitech QuickCams, for instance, you will be prompted to plug in the camera at a specific point during the installation.

After installing the Webcam driver and plugging in the camera, you're only halfway finished. Your next step is to test the camera's microphone or install a separate mic and test it. If you're using a camera with a built-in mic, you can control the audio settings via the software that came with the Webcam. If, on the other hand, you're using a standard headset plugged into your PC's audio jacks, you should use the Sound control panel in Windows to select, configure, and test your microphone.
